“Nothing like it, nothing like it”
TV news, the news “that affects our lives,” is evolution theory’s partner-in-crime. It also reinforces the conviction that all is flux always and yet no particular change is ever decisive. From Dan Rather to Darwin, change is the law that admits none, which is to say that all phenomena belong to it, whether the principle be selection or information, sensation or adaptation. Its scope may be the life of the individual or the life of the species. In either case, the “story” displayed “from every perspective” is the desideratum that drives CNN watchers and observers of the descent of man to the heights of a wicked fiction, which spins this yarn: men and man, species and specimen, can only ever be spectacle, never adaptation in the other sense, translation, invention, fiction: only ever new, it says, never otherwise.
